A long, long time ago...
I can still remember
How that music used to make me smile.
And I knew if I had my chance
That I could make those people dance
And, maybe, they’d be happy for a while.

But february made me shiver
With every paper I’d deliver.
Bad news on the doorstep;
I couldn’t take one more step.

I can’t remember if I cried
When I read about his widowed bride,
But something touched me deep inside
The day the music died.

So bye-bye, miss american pie.
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
And them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
Singin’, "this’ll be the day that I die.
"this’ll be the day that I die."

Did you write the book of love,
And do you have faith in God above,
If the Bible tells you so?
Do you believe in rock ’n roll,
Can music save your mortal soul,
And can you teach me how to dance real slow?

Well, I know that you’re in love with him
`cause I saw you dancin’ in the gym.
You both kicked off your shoes.
Man, I dig those rhythm and blues.

I was a lonely teenage broncin’ buck
With a pink carnation and a pickup truck,
But I knew I was out of luck
The day the music died.

I started singin’,
"bye-bye, miss american pie."
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
And singin’, "this’ll be the day that I die.
"this’ll be the day that I die."

Now for ten years we’ve been on our own
And moss grows fat on a rollin’ stone,
But that’s not how it used to be.
When the jester sang for the king and queen,
In a coat he borrowed from james dean
And a voice that came from you and me,

Oh, and while the king was looking down,
The jester stole his thorny crown.
The courtroom was adjourned;
No verdict was returned.
And while lennon read a book of marx,
The quartet practiced in the park,
And we sang dirges in the dark
The day the music died.

We were singing,
"bye-bye, miss american pie."
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
And singin’, "this’ll be the day that I die.
"this’ll be the day that I die."

Helter skelter in a summer swelter.
The birds flew off with a fallout shelter,
Eight miles high and falling fast.
It landed foul on the grass.
The players tried for a forward pass,
With the jester on the sidelines in a cast.

Now the half-time air was sweet perfume
While the sergeants played a marching tune.
We all got up to dance,
Oh, but we never got the chance!
`cause the players tried to take the field;
The marching band refused to yield.
Do you recall what was revealed
The day the music died?

We started singing,
"bye-bye, miss american pie."
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
And singin’, "this’ll be the day that I die.
"this’ll be the day that I die."

Oh, and there we were all in one place,
A generation lost in space
With no time left to start again.
So come on: jack be nimble, jack be quick!
Jack flash sat on a candlestick
Cause fire is the devil’s only friend.

Oh, and as I watched him on the stage
My hands were clenched in fists of rage.
No angel born in hell
Could break that satan’s spell.
And as the flames climbed high into the night
To light the sacrificial rite,
I saw satan laughing with delight
The day the music died

He was singing,
"bye-bye, miss american pie."
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
And singin’, "this’ll be the day that I die.
"this’ll be the day that I die."

I met a girl who sang the blues
And I asked her for some happy news,
But she just smiled and turned away.
I went down to the sacred store
Where I’d heard the music years before,
But the man there said the music wouldn’t play.

And in the streets: the children screamed,
The lovers cried, and the poets dreamed.
But not a word was spoken;
The church bells all were broken.
And the three men I admire most:
The father, son, and the holy ghost,
They caught the last train for the coast
The day the music died.

And they were singing,
"bye-bye, miss american pie."
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
And them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
>
> I hope all is well with all of you who I have
> crossed paths with in past years. Myself, I am
> living well. I want to give my thoughts as to what
> I hope is positive future for all of us. After much
> thought and consternation as to where I may (or may
> not) fit into this yearly oddesy we call Burningman.
> My desire to be a part of the BRCPO continues.
>
> I have had the privilage of meeting, getting to
> know, and being befriended by many of the
> personallities we have gathered at the BRCPO. We
> come from different backgrounds, locations and
> places in our lives to meet and interact together at
> BRC. We look at life from different perspectives
> and I try to respect everyones diversity in regards
> to what we might be seeking when coming to the man.
> I would like you to read what I have just written
> again and challange yourself to see if you are doing
> this. This has been a difficult year of growing,
> changes and acceptance by many of us. I have been
> online, watching, reading, and hurting with you and
> I would like the hurting to stop. I am but one
> burner and can only do my part. You have to want
> and do your part to make this work.
>
> With the man burning on August 30th there is much to
> accomplish and we are running out of time to make
> our peace and more importantly, move forward. We
> can do this but we must act now. I have been in
> phone and e-mail contact with some of you and it is
> to this end I am posting here. The hurt you feel
> may be well and true. The hurt may linger with you
> but we all should learn and grow by this. Holding
> this as your shield is not going to help us but only
> devide us into fractioned camps.
>
> I am coming to the man and will have a fantastic
> year with (or without) you, but, I would wish to
> give a part of my time to the BRCPO. This is not my
> complete identity but just a part of me. If the
> BRCPO was my sole reasoning for coming I would, in
> my opinion, be missing a greater, larger, and more
> important oneness with you. I hope to learn from
> you where and why you might be headed in your
> travels as this opens my eyes to another
> possibility.
>
> We cannot continue to learn from each other if we
> cannot first accept each other. I fully understand
> there are absolutes, boundries and "deal breakers"
> with myself and others and maybe you are at your
> wits end concerning past interacctions but if you
> are still at the table I invite you to concider a
> chance of acceptance not just of others but of
> yourself. Now is our chance to take a step back and
> a deep breath. OK, step 1- put your/my best foot
> foreward. Step 2 - take a chance and put out
> your/my hand in peace. Step 3 - hope you/I have the
> balls to step up and do the same. (You my be
> surprised at this but have faith in me, I just may
> want to end the hurt and walk with you.
>
> I asking that we have a few basics:
> Please no more flaming posts of others.
> If you are in disaggrement please do not
> personally attack others.
> Open your mind and heart to differnet views of
> the same situation.
>
> I still want to discuss real and physical aspects of
> this years BRCPO but I will wait until a later date
> and let this all sink in. Thank you for your
> patience and understanding.
>
> Aloha, Blu'
>

9:39 AM ageefess: hey deadletter
Blue here
me: yo, parallel processing.
ageefess: lol
so I need to let you be linear or can you chat?
me: be aware that my chat is track 3
9:40 AM ageefess: got it
9:41 AM I assume you saw the note General and I were sent by Sweetthang? I have since tried to contact the General and Lady K a few times with no response at all
9:42 AM me: Well, I barely was able to drag her into a board meeting, cause then Aiden is back from being out of town for several days, and then she leaves for 4 days out of state. So she's trying to spend time with her children before she is gone. more time next week.
ageefess: ah ok
me: general is working 10pm to 6am shifts, and passing out during the day.
9:43 AM scheduling that board meeting was hell.
ageefess: ah ok...
what kinda board meeting
me: She did mention that she responded to Sweetthang that yes, placement shoudl consider it an entirely second camp application, and that was all they responded.
board meeting for Tool Shed, our tool oriented non-profit.
9:44 AM woodshop, metal shop, video lab, darkroom.
ageefess: ok cool...
I wondered what you think of this response...
9:45 AM me: You keep saying that 'communication will need to happen'. I would point out that that is not a _need_.
ageefess: Hi Sweetthang,

Thank you for your email and I am sorry for the delayed response.

It was my goal to make contact with the General (Greg Perkins), but as of yet, no response (despite a few attempts). In light of this, it is my request that we file as separate camps.

I would ask that our camp be placed on 5-7 o'clock Esplanade if possible, and let the General's camp occupy the Center Camp position. I would ask that our submitted camp name be renamed as [Talk to Deadletter about].

If necessary, I am willing to provide more detailed illustrations that might be expected to accompany Esplanade placement.

Please let me know if you have received this email and if this information allows you to proceed with placement of our camp.

Thank you,

Blue
Nothing is a need
9:46 AM But it would be helpful so we don't look like duffuses to BRC and Gerlach post office
me: No person can hold another person to an obligation of time - voting with one's feet (giving energy where we will) is one of the only ethical leverages we can place upon a system.
ageefess: anyway... need, want whatever...
9:47 AM me: It's not their obligation to make sure that you don't look like a doofus to the gerlach po and the bmorg. they've already laid the groundwork for their own framing/position in that system.
ageefess: I am not going to argue about that
but if they, for example, want to only have one place have a postmark
9:48 AM some communication might be helpful
not obligated
but helpful
and with the joint tools they have
me: well, that's my point about 'hitting the ground running' - they are well down the lane in terms of having those things lined up.
ageefess: eh
9:49 AM me: and they have no obligation to be helpful to you and your project, who ends up coming across as a late-starter, whether or not you feel that you have a separate and legitimate claim to the project.
ageefess: as one of our campmates just wrote me on your outlook as follows "I can't agree with turning blindsiding your campmates into a virtue"
me: legitimacy is perceptual, posession being nine-tenths, etc.
they don't see you and those people as 'campmates'
ageefess: and "He's just transmitting info 2nd hand. And giving Lady K credit for Margaret's sorting work is just plain inaccurate."
me: at least I don't think so.
9:50 AM ageefess: they are community mates then
me: Margaret of the BRCPO or Gerlach PO?
ageefess: no
of BRCPO
me: are they? that's your wish, they dont' have to agree with that framing.
ageefess: you're right
from your frame
and I agree with you
9:51 AM I don't want to expend effort on figuring out what they owe
us
etc
me: snigger
'owe
'
ageefess: ?
9:52 AM forget owe
but I feel I owe the community I am serviing information
me: your language betrays you, young jedi.
have you ever read, "And then there were none..."
ageefess: no
9:53 AM who wrote it
me: http://www.abelard.org/e-f-russell.htm has the full text.
eric frank russell.
9:54 AM ageefess: main point? I mean, you're right that at this point our verbal jousting doesn't matter... may the best camp succeed
or both, who knows
me: well, I will tell you that I think they are leaving it to the bmorg, which may or may not be the best strategy.
9:55 AM ageefess: I think they are doing the same thing
and it's a mistake
because BMORG cares... but not that much
me: cause what's the bmorg gonna do? They have very little criteria for 'picking', and it's not clear that they know that they are being asked to 'pick'
ageefess: yeah, I wanna change our name slightly
9:56 AM and I told them they can have the CC position
me: Remember, you swore up and down that Lady K was the devil, so they took their toys and made their own camp. live with the consequences of your choices.
ageefess: that is the way you are interpreting my words
and they can have their toys
me: I am trying to convince them NOT to take a center camp position, in order to have a psychological break from years past.
perhaps both camps can/should take 3:00 and 9:00?
9:57 AM ageefess: I would rather have esplanade
me: Burning Man Community Postal Service (the general and Lady K et al)
ageefess: as you can see in my letter to placement above
me: or esplanade, 3:30 and 8:30
if there are two camps, symmetry would be healing, I believe.
ageefess: did they change their name, or no?
me: I think both should change names.
Do you have any name ideas?
9:58 AM let go of the past, embrace a new future.
ageefess: I love your brand... I was thinking I like "Deadletter"
me: deadletter accepts all thefts: deadletter: accept all substitutes!
ageefess: no! really?
9:59 AM me: There's been a different kind of Dead Letter Office in the past.
it was for writing letters to dead people. it was sad.
ageefess: I want your postmark everything... and a cameo apprearance in the camp :-)
10:00 AM postmark = branding trademark you have on everthing
I love it
anyway... here is what I think would be good...
if you know the answers great
me: how much are you joking? I made the mistake of posting my anti-albi diatribe to the list, and having drawn that line in the sand would have a hard time working with him under my branding.
10:01 AM ageefess: do you really feel that way? I mean he can be an asshole
but so what
we all are at times
10:02 AM if Lady K and General come by my camp, I will welcome them as BRC citizens
me: His language is only alterable from afar. It's filled with what people 'should' do and how they 'should' act.
anyway, what you think would be good:
ageefess: 1) would the other BRCPO prefer us to fight for the postmark from Gerlach or would they be willing to accept mail we collect and avoid that fight?
10:03 AM me: probably
ageefess: probably... which? lol
me: oh, hah.
I believe that you can very easily hand them a huge stack of stamped mail and say, "for usps" and at that second you will have 'mailed' it in a legal sense.
10:04 AM certainly allows your camp to operate under a greater amount of freedom relating to behavior and whatnot, which is what a large amount of controversy from previous years has included, to wit: behavior surrounding the potential crime of mail interference.
10:05 AM ageefess: it would make things easier, but I worry that General and Lady K, knowing that would not want to make things easier on me
or our camp
10:06 AM me: they will take mail from any source. you could always send it with an innocent.
ageefess: lol
true
me: next question is probably: will they share the bags of mail that need to have a good-faith effort to be 'delivered'.
10:07 AM ageefess: nah, I wouldn't ask it of them
me: ?
you would do intra-playa mail and mail to go off-playa and call it a day?
shit, you're in the clear, then.
ageefess: right!
10:08 AM the interation can be minimal or none... however...
me: that's all easy as pie. No coordination necessary, and be careful to indicate somehow (The Fine Print) that mail accepted isn't mailed till someone, of their own volunteer gifting of time, takes it to a location considered to be a legal federal mailing drop point (gerlach or the cancellation camp)
10:09 AM so then pick another name, have two NON brcpo-named post offices, and this divorce is as simple as my wifes and I. We owned nothing. She said, "you take the credit card debt, and we're good to go!"
ageefess: I will tell you, I do think of the General like a brother... a very grumpy one... and someday I hope we can hug and make up... he treated my Mother with such respect when she visited the BRCPO, and he did everything to treat her right.
10:10 AM me: so what was the 'however'?
ageefess: the howeevr is
me: sounds like the name is the thing, and then we get to see several years of two camps. Which could have happened years ago.
would have been healthier for all.
10:11 AM ageefess: the however is that despite the fact that we don't have to interact, I would like to on a separate and personal level with General when it makes sense... and Lady K too
this split only occured in 2007
10:12 AM me: nah, it was a long time coming. I've been watching the PO for a long time.
ageefess: there was no issue of splitting before this
me: it was an underlay
you were losing people that you weren't noticing, that I was meeting all over the play.
playa.
ageefess: I don't think Lady K is the devil, but I don't like the way she acted out there last year... and I think not being in the same camp will allow us to make peace if she is willing
10:13 AM losing people yes... but we all knew why
me: volunteers who thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread, and who bounced off of the power-clique who were anathema to them.
the reputation of the BRCPO as assholes had very little to do with window-service to participants, and everything to do with the rejection stories of people who wanted to contribute.
since 2003, my first year with the brcpo.
10:14 AM ageefess: and there weren't too camps within a camp... there were people who were power-mongers (mostly at the windows) and harrassers
two camps that is
me: you had people still at the brcpo, and a huge electron cloud of people with first-hand stories of trying to be at the brcpo and leaving.
10:15 AM PedEx is being revived again, as well.
ageefess: cool
what do you think of the name BRCPO 2.0?
10:16 AM me: So if you want to make nice with them, do it AFTER this year's burn. Don't try to have some on-playa conference, or transformative conversation, resist that tendency at all costs. Cause the tendency to make up on playa results in incomplete healing.
10:17 AM Let's see, what do we call our city? Black Rock City, Burning Man, The Burn...
Aren't there any other euphimism that don't have the same acronym as before?
ageefess: perhaps I should send em some nice mail on playa
me: hate mail would be funnier.
anyway, names.
ageefess: ha ha
yes
10:18 AM hate mail! or a hate mail-a-gram that was funny as hell
with a lap dance
me: are you at all worried that you are going to keep someo f the people that BOTH camps would rather dump? The harassers/abusers?
ageefess: yes, but...
10:19 AM me: another good reason for BOTH camps to take a new location, see? so that those ne-er do wells walk up to slide right back into their old role, and have to go to a new place and really face the new-ness before stepping into the same old problem.
ageefess: I was also thinking that with our plan we would have a facade outside the facade that would allow people who wanted to be abuses harrassed etc consent before they got any
10:20 AM I published our plan for everyone to see
me: names, names...
10:21 AM I think both camps have a chance at health. I also think that chance at health is predicated on a symbolic break from the old.
Let the old be the sin eater.
It's like that dog in "Best In Show" when it was actually the adults who were psycho.
10:22 AM still, they let, in their minds, the 'dog be the problem' and then their relationship worked.
10:23 AM ageefess: ever heard of "hashing"
Hash House Harriers?
there are all these clubs... no centralization
all are Hash House Harriers
10:24 AM but each has it's own name and designation and culture
me: it's a running?
thing?
ageefess: yes
drinkers with a running problem
fun as hell
anyway, that is what I was thinking the brcpo model might be
me: how about a verb:
ageefess: we keep the name with designators
10:25 AM me: Going Postal
ageefess: so differentiate
10:26 AM me: Or if they are the BMCPS (Burning Man Community Postal Service), you could be the opposite of Community. What's the opposite of Community?
ageefess: I think we should stick with BRCPO in one way or another
oh
10:27 AM were you serious or not about stealing your logo trademark name etc
because if you were, I would like to seriously consider that
10:28 AM me: if you are hung up on the BRCPO, then there's not a lot I can do to massage this situation.
ageefess: well pretty much everything that can be done is done...
me: this symbolic center is a sticking point.
10:29 AM ageefess: what center?
they can have the center
center camp
they can have BRCPO too
me: if either group uses the old name, then they are making a presentation to the world that invokes the history of the old BRCPO.
ageefess: some of the history is good
10:30 AM we are in the United States
which had slavery
and bad stuff
but let's keep the name
because there is good stuff too
and you can't deny the history
10:31 AM it happened
me: I feel like you aren't hearing me. Both can be equal offspring of the BRCPO project which lasted many years. if either of them takes the name right now, here at the moment of separation, then it's a pissing match over who is the 'real' offspring.
10:32 AM ageefess: I think I do hear you
I just disagree
me: Then what was the point of this whole conversation?
10:33 AM ageefess: I think the BRCPO with slight modification could let poeple know the history, but that we're different
me: You and they will go down the vortex, everyone will hate everyone, the Bmorg will have to choose.
ageefess: lol
I don't think so
we'll change our name
if not slightly, to something cool
like Deadletter
me: Both sides letting go of that symbolic center allows for growth and diversity.
10:34 AM after a year or three, it will be that the BRCPO gave birth to two projects.
ageefess: but were you serious about not being pissed at intellectual stealing of your brand
me: Depends... does the logo go with with name?
ageefess: I like that logo
me: Would you call it "Burning Man Dead Letter Office" or simply
"Deadletter"
10:35 AM ageefess: Deadletter Post Office"?
me: If you were using 'deadletter' i'd want to get all involved in making a deadletter system on playa for doing hand-to-hand mail around the country and playa, cause deadletter is all about hand-to-hand mail.
ageefess: hell yeah
that sounds awesome
me: here's the difference, though, between that and traditional BRCPO delivery.
10:36 AM ageefess: you take out USPS
and you have to find the peeps that are going back to whereever
that's a real fucking project
me: at the brcpo, participants were allowed to become delivery agents, and they carried mail from the sender to the delivery, being sort of close-fisted about not letting go of the mail till it was real close to them (their friend, boyfriend, campmate, etc).
10:37 AM with deadletter in general (off-playa), we give mail to people, all over the country, and say, "give this to someone going to chicago" or "give this to someone going to florida" and when it gets closer, they give_it_away
10:38 AM so deliverers under the deadletter branding would have to be encouraged to take a little bit more of a fuck-all approach to the mail.
ageefess: but ultimatly it gets to the person? have you done this before?
10:39 AM me: I do mail all year round. I did hundreds of pieces of mail at Flipside last week. The mail travels, people improve it, it's all opened and written on and changed. It's a connectivity game and art piece, and when a mail actually gets delivered it's actually sort of too bad.
cause then it isn't traveling any more.
10:40 AM ageefess: wow
me: I do deadletter all the time
that's why, if you were to adopt the branding, you might accidentally be adopting more than you meant to.
Though it's certainly tempting, though super weird.
Look at it this way... what is it you want this alternate post office to DO
10:41 AM ageefess: maybe peeps could have a choice: Postal Service or Dead Letter... and people would be splained the difference
and true artists would make the right choice
me: What is it that is at the core of your desire? To take mail at a _WINDOW_?
to have Participants carrying mail?
to deliver the mail?
ageefess: to make performance art at a window
10:42 AM me: window. you want WINDOW.
and all the rest is secondary?
ageefess: I like window
me: so you want a Postal Office Facade project.
ageefess: lol
maybe :-)
me: Cause what about the Potsal system?
do you understand that?
or remember it? or even know of it?
ageefess: no I do not
me: See, the Potsal system might actually be perfect for you.
10:43 AM The Potsal system involved a board with a HUGE map of the city.
ageefess: what is it
me: The mail goes on the board, and then people who are walking by are encouraged to take mail to that neighborhood. One piece of mail, one participant (or a few pieces of mail).
Potsal and Deadletter camped together one year, you see.
ageefess: I like that
Lots of good things to think about
10:44 AM I need to get back to workish stuff soon
me: the number of delivery people was probably 50x that of the BRCPO, and they never got on a high horse about being delivery peeps.
ageefess: thank you for talking with me
hope to meetcha on playa
me: You understand that I'll already be on playa doing Deadletter with my branding? I'll probably do 2000 pieces of mail on playa, for points off-playa, carried by burners heading out of state?
ageefess: ah ok
10:45 AM nice
didn't knpow
me: so if you say that you'd want to use my logo/name then I'd have to come over there and set it all up. and then I'm suddenly 'in' your camp working with you, etc.
ageefess: no
I said cameo
me: which isn't bad, it's definitely a new thought.
well, deadletter system's take a lot of maintenance.
ageefess: yeah no kidding
10:46 AM it might be biting of more than we can chew
lemme think about it, and thanks for the ideas
me: cause the worst/best part is that as people write to one of the empty envelopes with the name on it, the envelope has to be copied so as to not lose the person from the system.
10:47 AM I think you want to have something with the word "postal station" in it, like a british postal station.
cause the most important revelation to come out of this conversation is that the WINDOW is what you care about. So take that and run with it!
ageefess: be well deadletter
10:48 AM me: A Postal Window project, which was tied to a Potsal Board (after all of the window art, then the person simply walks over and puts it on the board for people to take with them in their walks!) would be hilarious.
So last question: where are you at with the name right now?
10:49 AM ageefess: yes, indeed
me: That they would be the BRCPO, and you'd be something else? that they might be BMCPS and you'd be BRCPO 2.0?
Black Rock Postal Station sounds nice.
BRPS
Black Rock Postal Service maybe.
ageefess: I am with the idea that General and Lady K aren't budging on the name either, and since they aren't communicating there is no way to know... so we'll go with a slight mod of BRCPO
10:50 AM me: I think they will be BMCPS if they don't have to fight with you about the name.
otherwise, neither can budge.
so someone has to go first.
would you not use the BRCPO contingent on them not using it either?
I could broker that.
it could be done.
10:51 AM ageefess: I think we'll do BRCPO 2.0... I wanted to do Black Rock City Post Office - An Uncensored Experiment
but too many letter to be accepted
me: Then it's back to having one and only one with the BMORG picking.
ageefess: 2.0 is tounge in cheek... it's different, it's the smae
me: so glad I could waste my time that I needed to be working on my homework before court this afternoon. I certainly won't give you the time and energy again.
10:52 AM ageefess: they doen't have to pick if one is even slightly differnt
so glad I could waste my time that I needed to be working on my homework before court this afternoon. I certainly won't give you the time and energy again....
so bitter
why?
later

We've got original art playa stamps, harassment postcards, bureaucracy, stickers, adult experiences, and surprises.

Is reconciliation automatically the most desirable outcome for the two divided factions of the previous years BRCPO? Let's consider the alternative - divorce and separation, at least for a year. If there is a fatal flaw in one or both camps, existing separately will reveal that flaw. One group will flourish, and the other will spend it's time blaming the world, the universe, the BMORG, the other camp, etc, for their non-functionality.

Let's look at some of the functions of the Post Office, with an eye towards whether or not they are duplicable.

1) The Name
2) Intra-Playa Mail (Potsal Mail)
3) Playa to USPS
4) USPS to Playa - deadlettered
5) USPS to Playa - certified
6) window operations

Let's start with some of the easy ones:

#2) Intra-playa mail. Anyone with any sort of window can run a Potsal board or delivery service, and participants can and will provide content. Under no legal obligations, Potsal or Intra-playa mail can be fucked with, destroyed, bartered for, etc.

#3) Playa to USPS - anyone can take mail to the post office. To avoid trouble with the post office, the person taking the mail needs to be clear that this is their personal favor to the mailor, and that no representation has been made that the mail has been 'mailed' until it actually reaches a cancellation stamp location. A mail camp could collect mail out in deep playa to be delivered to Gerlach or a BMCPS cancellation location, and as long as they were clear that the mail had not YET been mailed until further steps were taken, they should be fine.

With Cancellation Stamp: If a cancellation stamp is present, the mail is considered 'mailed' at that very moment. The Gerlach postmistress has had spotty performance from the BRCPO in relation to the cancellation stamp in the past, and appreciated the diligence of last year's postal signers, specifically, Lady Kay. The Gerlach post office is NOT likely to grant two camps each a cancellation stamp.

#4) USPS to Playa - deadlettered
Regular first-class mail is considered 'deadlettered' and 'delivered' the moment it leaves the hands of the USPS and is given to a duly registered representative of the BRCPO/BMCPS. This mail could be easily split/shared between two mail camps. While there is an expectation that mail with return addresses be _given_back_to_the_USPS_ when not delivered, a good handful of it has ended up in the hands of the Dead Letter Crew in years past.

#5) USPS to Playa - certified mail
The mail is signed for, each and every piece, by a person that the USPS trusts. There is QUITE a lot of it. These pieces are then delivered to participants, the participants IDs are checked (or a good faith effort made to confirm identity). Each of these pieces of mail, if it goes astray, counts as one potential felony charge of interference with the federal mails. Thus, the person signing for the mail takes quite a risk. If posties take it upon themselves to fuck with, open, or otherwise misdeliver a piece of certified mail, they are crossing the line of 'do no harm' with their art - the harm being taken by the person who last signed for the certified mail. Last year, it was Lady Kay.

#6) Window Operations, Potsal Boards, etc.
Anyone can create a postal window for postal-based art on playa, and there have been many different versions of these over the years. The Dead Letter Truck, the Potsal Service, Ped Ex, BRSD, and BRCPO/BMCPS aren't even the only mail projects out there. This is inherently replicable.

And the first shall be last: the Name.

#1) The Name:
The General has already applied for a theme camp under the name, BRCPO/Burning Man Community Postal Service. While the BMORG refuses to discuss placement till after August 1st, I am pushing the General to take 3:00 or an Esplanade location in order to set a new tone with the BMCPS.

The summary:

#1) Name: There is not likely to be a BMCPS _and_ a BRCPO this year.
#2) Intra-Playa Mail - there's enough for everyone
#3) Playa to USPS - Anyone can take mail going for off-playa, and one camp could be a local drop-point for off-playa mail, or the other camp could take it straight to gerlach. As long as they make no representations that giving it to the non-cancellation camp counts as "mailed"
#4) USPS to Playa - first class deadlettered - there's enough for everyone
#5) USPS to Playa - certified - this goes with the cancellation stamp and the legal responsibility to deliver
#6) Window Operations - there's enough for everyone.

The only real points of contention to be worked out in a DIVORCE are

a) shall there be two camps (divorce) at all?
b) who shall have the placement, name and cancellation stamp?
c) all else is splittable between two camps

With two camps, the camp of Blue, Brian, Pedro, Doodlebug nominally spoken for by The Philosopher isn't really bartering from a place of power. Application for theme-camp done by the new BMCPS group, facade done by the new BMCPS group, liaising with the Gerlach PO done by the BMCPS, and decisions on who can _CAMP_ with the BMCPS are all being decided independently.

So in regards to Blue's recent 'call for reconciliation' - my own read as a 'fiercely independent operator' is that one group of people is hitting the ground running, handling application, name, cancellation, placement, and physical infrastructure, and the other is still living in the world of fantasy while typing furiously, thinking that typing and talking, at the end of the week, will somehow magically create an actual camp.

Let me know, Blue and others, what progress you've made on _actually_ applying for, building, and creating an alternative camp. Alternatively, please argue clearly and coherently why they should do all the work and then allow you to cherry-pick the symbolic jobs of _administering_ the post office, once all the pre-operations work has been done by others.

The Story of the Red Hen: Whoever bakes the bread, gets to EAT the bread.

Hi Blue,
First of all it appears that the questionnaire did not error out.
(any technical issues do go to forms@burningman.com, FYI)

This is the second Theme Camp Questionnaire for Black Rock City Post
office for 2008 received and I have read the email that was sent to Terry.

I am cc'ng Greg Perkins on this as I cannot place this camp twice, and I
cannot make a judgement about the overall situation. I must know if your
camp issues have been ironed out and which questionnaire it is that we are
reviewing in terms of making our decisions about placement. Or if there
are now two separate camps.

thanks,

sweetthang

> Dear Placement Team,
>
> Althought the main body of the Theme Camp Questionnaire was completed with
> no problems, there was an error presented during?the post-questionnaire
> questions asking for more information on "Activities for Mature
> Audiences". Please let me know what infomation is needed, so I may provide
> it.
>
> Thank you,
>
> Blue

>
>
>

...and neither was approved...

so far.

Reason is that -- word is as of now -- BRC placement isn't going to decide which application is valid and which one is not; or if we should file as two separate camps. That's up to us, and that's the word as of today. I will write more of this later when I have time, unless the General has time to fill in some of the details.

I only know details of the one application, so I can only speak to it. As an FYI to those that are interested, here is what was written on the one application I had knowlege of:

Physical Description:
--------------------
The front of the camp will be a facade, similar to the facade of previous
years, with two distinctions:

1) There will be a visual depiction of the mail and post offices through
history from the earliest treatment of mail throughout the world including
Persia, India, China and Rome to modern mail treatment in America and the rest
of the world. There are intricate international systems which allow mail to be
shared with from one person to another in various countries, and this will be
explored as well. Although many people may know of the Postal Service vision
of Benjamin Franklin, others may not be aware of the 1692 grant from King
William and Queen Mary to Thomas Neale "to erect, settle and establish within
the chief parts of their majesties' colonies and plantations in America, an
office or offices for the receiving and dispatching letters and pacquets, and
to receive, send and deliver the same under such rates and sums of money as
the planters shall agree to give". This visual treatment will go on to explore
"hot" issues such as: a) how laws from 1873 censorship affect -- even today --
the dream of free speech in the US postal system b) How the monopoly by the US
government (and other goverments) affect freedoms, c) How the BRCPO
integration with outside postal service parrallels and parodies the
interconnectivity of international systems.

2)In the windows opening directly toward center camp, there will be no
adult-oriented activity, nor extreme ill-tempered treatment by postal workers.
Instead, those adults participants who give consent to "Extreme Postal
Service", will enter through one of the doors on the facade to the interior
lobby of the facade structure. There will be no need to enter this area for
routine postal matters, such as sending or receiving mail on or off playa.

Interactivity Description:
-------------------------
The BRCPO has had a rich history of providing service to the participants at
Burning Man, with highly personalized, non-commoditized interaction with every
human in the community who chooses to interact with the BRCPO -- clearly
opposite of what you will find in the USPS today, which could be characterized
as treating service of humans as a commodity. Because of this, our "service"
(aka performance art) is many times much slower than you would find, as slow
or even slower, than the stereotype of a US Post Office. Personalized
performance art, sometimes confused as a utility, is our American Dream.

We have been able to accomplish our goal through interaction at the windows
and delivery of mail on playa. At windows, BRC participants are treated to a
interaction by approaching a window "frame" -- like the literal art frame, but
at the same time also like the frame of reference -- that outlines the
participatory art that is to follow.

Our philosophy initiated with with the disgruntled postal worker of yore, with
the performace a persona of ill-temper and meanness in appearance, but loving
in heart. One dilemma we have faced in the past is properly training those who
interact with the BRC participatory public, so a) the public knows this is a
performance and b) the BRCPO postal official knows their role is
tongue-in-cheek, and not to allow the role to get the better of them. This
year there will be required training for all but the most seasoned BRCPO
workers, quality control, and a separate area for those who consent to more
radical interaction.

No money is allowed to change hands at the BRCPO. Although "bribes" have been
encouraged in the past, the move toward gifting and true personal interaction
and performance art is afoot. Just as BRC progressed from a barter to a
gifting economy, the BRCPO is moving in the same direction. Bribes, although
not prohibited, will be second to true performance art and gifting. Because
the there are no postcards for sale, BRCPO accepts postcards from BRC
participants who print these and take them to the BRCPO to distribute as free
gifts. The BRCPO camp participants (aka the "BRCPO") will also print cards as
well. In 2007 some postcards were prohibited from being ditributed because of
the content of the post cards, unfortunately censored by some of our own camp
participants*. We feel this is folly, and in 2008, our American Dream of true
freedom of speech -- as provided for by both Constitutional Amendment and the
burning principle of Radical Self Expression -- with all post cards, as well
as other forms of written, oral, and gestural communication, no matter how
objectionable to the current, former, or future government administrations.

Although delievery of BRC mail is usually confined to daylight hours,
particpation at the BRCPO is a 24-hour interaction with customer windows open
both during the day and night. More importantly, participation this year will
go beyond the range of dates for Burning Man, in that BRC citizens will be
asked to participate in a number of ways that will possibly stretch their
paradigm of Burning Man participation. Participants from around the country
will be asked to submit designs to be used for the official BRCPO post card
and an official stamp for the BRCPO. It is possible multiple designs will be
selected, depending on the quality of submittals. This is the first time the
BRCPO has done this.

The "Physical Description" section (section 21) mentioned a separate area for
more "extreme postal service". The reason for this is twofold. First, for many
BRC participants, especially those with less BRC experience, the persona of
the ill-tempered postal worker is so well acted and so seemingly real, BRC
Participants don't leave with the understanding that the interaction is meant
to be a parody. Second, although the BRCPO is considered an adult themed camp,
it is better to separate the consenting adults from the those that wish to
stay away from adult themed activities.

In essence, this year will be just as -- if not more -- interactive as
previous years, but with an emphasis on ensuring that all participants have an
enjoyable and growth-filled experience.
---------------

Fellow Posties, please keep in mind I have as yet to have contact with "the other side". And from my last email, you know I am open to it. Knowing how hectic my own schedule, I do not fault anyone for not contacting me as of yet. If there is interest for any entity or person in contacting me, please call me at 202-669-7274 or email me. I don't think circumstances are beyond repair with our BRCPO family, but then again, sometimes families can't live together.

Love,

Going away from home for awhile? Have all your mail sent to you at your temporary address!
[minimum of two weeks]

Premium Forwarding Service (PFS) is a domestic service for residential customers. With this service, USPS® forwards ALL of your mail from your permanent address to a temporary address. Enroll at your local Post Office™.

Some features of PFS include:
- Your mail will be forwarded to you on a weekly basis if you are away for a minimum of two weeks up to one year.
- Most mail is forwarded once a week via Priority Mail®
- Some mail is reshipped separately, but immediately upon arrival at the primary address.

$ - Enrollment fee is just $10.00 and weekly reshipment fees are $11.95.

- Your permanent address does not change.
- Your temporary address is not provided to mailers.

Some benefits of PFS include:
- You do not miss important mail while you are away.
- All your mail reaches you, most via Priority Mail. (See Conditions of Use*)
- Your weekly mailing goes out the same day every week on a regular schedule.

Q. Who uses PFS?
A. PFS is perfect for extended stays – from two weeks up to one full year! Snowbirds, executives on temporary assignments, students, individuals with an extended family care situation or who are away on an extended vacation…all are good candidates for this service. Visit your local post office to enroll.

[* see the usps.com website for the rest of the details...this might be useful for Early Arrivals, but probably not most of us. I just posted it so y'all would maybe know in case your friends, old, new and unmet might ask you. Have fun! Safety Third! And remember, there's no eye in USPS.com!]

So for no-where (the euro regional in spain) I am setting up a post office. Using last years photos to make post cards and then pre stamping them and allowing people to mail them to home in uk, france, germany, sitzerland, sweeden the states whereever there little heart desires. and mailing them when i return from the cliff edge back to reality (although addmittedly coming from nowhere down to ideallic rural spain is much easuier transition than downtown reno)

what i would like to do would be able to get people to send them to friends playa side too. so you could mail your old theme camp, or friends that chose BM over Nowhere.

However, since nowhere runs from 6-9th july that will be very early to mail them to the BRCPO, wont it?? if i post em a week after that mail from europe to the stes generally is 7-10 days in arriving. so is there any way i could mail em to an adress to be taken to the playa by someone form the post office or if i sent em and they got there before BM would the us postal service hold em.

the second stage of my plan is that since everyone loves gettign mail i am going to canvass peopel on tribe to send a postcard from their home cities to spain and then i will deliver em, it dont matter if people dont know anyone at the event its just nice to get mail right, kinda like write to a prisoner or a soldier overseas kinda shit.

Admittedly this is just a ploy for me to conjure up some groovy post mans outfits, candy raver mailman, nekkid silver mail man, glittermailman, and an excuse to hire my slef that camel i've been promising myself all year long for my delivery service. (does organic camel shit count as moop if you are on farmland)

anyhoo's i look forward to chattin to some of you guys about my plans and getting some advice.

I'vve noticed some negative vibes bout if the post office will be there this year, but seriously guys it is one of the most bueatiful services on the playa and I'm honoured to be carrying the torch this side of the atlantic. Gettting mail from someone who couldnt make it is really touching and such a joyous gift to give.

i woont be playa side this year as i will be in india but i am looking forward to sending all my firends postcards from india to let them know i am thinking of them!

The rules for these types of mail can be confusing even for a window worker, and especially for one or a handfull of people.

I'd like to include more workers in this 'mysterious' process assuming you're willing so I suggest that we ask Joela for a training session. This should eliminate any misgivings she has about us and the mail, and also help us do a better job. Here is a letter I started any input is welcome:

---------------------------------------------------------
Joela,

We are interested in continuing to sort outgoing mail for you. However, we realize that training in sorting and stamping and postmarking needs to fall on the shoulders of more than a couple of people in our group. Would it be possible for you to hold a special training for our volunteers so that the mail you recieve is sorted and stamped in a more orderly fashion? We were thinking sometime pre-event. We could meet you in Gerlach or put you up at a hotel in reno for an evening (paying for your gas to reno and at least one meal). ONLY those that attend the training with you would be alowed to sort and postmark official USPS mail.

(somones contact info here)
---------------------------------------------------------

I'm willing to foot the bill for the hotel room in reno and the other expenses assuming people are interested in this and assuming the LLC agrees to drop off the sorted mail for us.

We (being the remaining members of the BRCPO) are concerned that outgoing (officially postmarked mail) may not occur this year. The main problem is mail delivery to Gerlach and that no one of the remaining BRCPO wants to take that on. We were curious as to weather there were BMORG volunteers who venture to Gerlach everyday and if they could perhaps pick up the mail from us and drop it off at the Gerlach Post office? We'd hate to see the large volume of mail art diminish due to the lack of outside service. We'd also hate for people who were counting on sending mail through us have to place undue pressure on Joela (postmistress in gerlach). Please let us know if something can be worked out.

So, end of the year approaching! A mail party has been held in Central California for the past few days. I started south and visited Lars (the man of the giant dollar from 2003 that sat out in front of the PO) in Shasta, CA. Also, he designed the two BRCPO postcards this year - the one with the giant head/bucket of blood/ants and the second was the one "Greetings from Black Ant City" with the black and red ants, blood in the playa, fighting over the man...

Anyway, he's a great guy and wonderful host - I enjoyed his big turkey dinner, shared some new burning man movies I have and the next day went to see his huge collage project in the town of Dunsmier

http://www.studiolarz.com/dunsmuir/winterwall/progress/051229.html

Also, visiting Lars I saw Paul who also volunteered at the BRcPO in 03.

Took off the next morning to visit Friendly Jen in Rocklin, CA. Suburban sprawl as far as the eye can see. Met her friends Roseanne, Matt and Jeremy. Matt's been a volunteer at the brcpo over the years but needs further training.

Spent some days here with Jen doing postal experimentation and reorientation. Told stories, ate well, traded music, and moved Jen into her new place.

Last night we got a late start and about 10pm made out for Reno, NV. Chains were needed part way there, so we had to buy some and put them on eventually arriving in Reno in time to catch Marsala and be taken to a private party with lots of lovely people till 4am including a ride in a limo and

this day now back in Rocklin and hoping tomorrow to go and visit the Philosopher in Chico. On my way back north to Portland I might hit one more postie, but not sure yet.

During this time I sent out 7 postcards and 3 CDs. Mail was created and sent. And, got to drive past the cool old post office in Reno...

Hope your holidays are going well.

It's a well-kept secret in Washington, DC. also, while there got this neat idea that the only really secure way to correspond with anyone these days is via the post. Cell phone, e-mail, forget it, but if you want to get a private message across, us post. So, we BRCPOers are living the revolution in a way.

About to finally head back to the West Coast after being out here for 12 days. Enjoying myself lately. In touch with Laurence, btw. Not sure if he's on this list, but just heard from him. And shelly's birthday was Saturday and Jen's in school, and finally have come up with a new project which I'm very excited about in the activist world. Local departments of peace, more on that later.

At last report they are sheltering some 500+ animals who are waiting to be reunited with their owners or fostered out. They are very much in need of some sort of vehicle to transport food and water out to ferel cat feeding stations in the area. If you know of anyone in the area who could help them do this please contact anyone at the shelter Its address is
I am afraid there is no phone there. They do have a website (http://www.noahswish.org) with general contact numbers and an address.

hEY aLL-

Caution here in Austin.
For anyone in contact w/ the burners, please pass
along this note for NOLA
BURNERS.

The austin burn community has set up shelter for those
NOLA burners needing
temporary shelter.
The 'Enchanted Forest' in South Austin has tents/
tarps/shade/showers/
outdoor kitchens/ coolers/ bedding/ port-o-johns etc
and a community who
will help support you. Easy walking distance to
stores/ buses.

They may be taking in survivor refugees at the moment,
but can expand
capacity soon. Obviously, if you have located a real
bed to sleep in, that
would be ideal, but if your options look like a cot at
the Austin convention
center, then you may want to consider extending your
camping adventure a
little longer.
Another great place to look is
www.hurricanehousing.org

"One of the things that came out of the Enchanted
Forest organizing was the
idea
that there will be a lot of New Orleans burners
returning from Burning Man
with
no where to go. We could really help some of these
folks out by offering
them
a place to stay when they return. I believe Debbie and
George are trying to
get
the word out to people at Burning Man...we're also
hoping that people in
Austin
can find some room in their lives to help these
displaced folks get their
lives
back into some semblance of order.

Logistics are still being worked out, but if you have
any space available
and can
take in a homeless burner, go ahead and reply here so
that we can start
matching
people with homes.

Thanks y'all....

Hi folks,
I am looking for art submissions for this year’s Great Nevada Art Fair postcard project. The postcards will be donated to BRCPO. You supply the art, and I’ll get 500 printed and delivered to the post office. I’ll put the artists name on it (if you want). Here are the parameters…

No BORG logo stuff. No “Man”, Hats, or “golf cart” crap. Although a flaming golf cart would be cool if it wasn’t taken already.

That’s about it. Get as half-assed and esoteric as you want. You have until 3:00 AM PST August 18th to get it in. Otherwise, I am designing my own this year. Trust me, if this is the case, it will be far worse than last years. I have way more time to think / screw-up this years.
Jun 11, 2005 10:36 PDT

Here's one idea. Go to this website

http://www.burningman.com/themecamps/05_camp_vill_1.html

pick a letter like the letter "P"

http://www.burningman.com/themecamps/05_camp_vill_4.html#P

and find all of the theme camps with that letter, perhaps another letter
or two - till you have about 100 camps. Now, buy some envelopes, or
postcards, and address these to the various camps you find. If there's
a contact person, even better - if there's an address of where the camp
will be located, even better. Address the mail.

Next, pick an evening, some enchanted evening. A week or two away. Put
a notice on your regional burning man list that you will be having a
mailing party for - "your cause here" or just "the BRCPO". Next invite
people to a bar, coffee shop, your choice. Encourage people to bring
stickers, gluesticks, stamps, rubber stamps, cash, gifts, office
supplies, staplers, glitter, what have you. Meet people there - create
some mail art.

Step. 17: bring the mail to the playa and we'll have our post office
stocked with mail to go out on day one which should create a lovely
cacophony of craziness for the entire week :)

Extra credit: Start a war: address hate mail or love letters from one
camp to another with appropriate return address. Usually, mail needs to
be a certain size and the bigger the more expensive - not so on the
playa - don't let size or shape or anything restrict you. You want to
send a brick, send a brick :) You want to send a piece of rice? So be
it.

Self-promotion: this could also be an invitation to friends to attend an
on-playa event? Like the night-shift orientation 1am on Wens. night
on-playa... or a rehersal of the Dae-Woo chorus.

We had a mail party this past Wens. night. Those who participated in
the raffle who we have actual postal addresses should be feeling the
effect of that soon :) Sorry, Lorraine, we didn't have an address for
you. Damn!!!

So, don't wait for the playa to come to you? Come to the playa. Hold a
mail art party - we did and it was a blast - these ideas above are only
what's coming from my addled brain sans caffeine on a Saturday when I
have to be in this stupid fucking computer lab. So. Welcome newcomers,
howdy my fellow peeps. Time to start it up!

Nutmeg Alfredo
Volunteer Coordinator

PS - of course write in about your success - and let us all know when
and where you do this if you choose this path. Take the blue pill.

Get a Mile High With Your Lover! Raffle: 3 flights to take place at BRC

The Black Rock Travel Agency, the official FBO at Black Rock City Airport and infamous
leader in the BM Aviation Community, has been gracious enough to donate to the Black
Rock City Post Office a few chances to actually join the Mile High Club!

Three Scenic & Erotic Flights are being offered over the main event itself, Burning Man 2005. Don't miss this chance to help support the BRCPO and to tell your friends that you "did it" while circling The Man. Indoor & Outdoor photography is encouraged and all landings are "Clothing Optional".

These incredible flights will be raffled off on May 28th. The last day to buy ticket(s)
will be May 27th. The Playa flights are approx 50 mins long, since everyone at Burning Man is already in a perpetual state of arousal and circling The Man for extended periods has been known to cause irreversible Nirvana.

Tickets are only $10 dollars each and can be purchased via PayPal www.paypal.com :

brcpomanagers @ yahoo.com

Each ticket earns one lucky couple a chance for a dream flight filled with love,
laughter, passion, excitement, beautiful scenery and life-long memories of the day
you both joined the infamous "Mile High Club". They also make great gifts.
Don't miss out!

Please include your name, address, phone number, and email with your entry. Prizes may not be sold, but may always be gifted to any deserving life-form(s), which should assure
you a seat next to {insert-your-deity-name} somewhere beyond the pearly
gates of {insert-your-afterlife-myth}. Winners will be notified on May 28, 2005.

Your tickets will help ensure that the Black Rock City Post Office, now in its 10th
year, can continue providing exceptionally disgruntled disservice to the discitizens
of our disreputable discity. We thank you in advance for your support.

Aside from being a postie, I'm also a Greeter. Again, this year there has been a rather lively discussion on the Greeters List during the last week or so about BMORG's prohibition on spanking Burning Man virgins. As Greeters and representatives of BMORG we're theoretically not allowed to dole out spankings, even if asked by the individual.

I posted my two-cents on the Greeters discussion list and offered a solution. Any virgin that specifically requested a spanking would be directed to the BRCPO where they would first have to fill out a form (or two) prior to being spanked.

Since I sponsored a window this year I beg your permission and support to turn it into a sort of express line for spanking forms. If the Greeters have the "spank tickets" printed up and distributed at the Greeters Station as proposed, I would hope that the BRCPO would be one of the Theme Camps that spankings could be delivered.

If anyone wants to help design another pointless spank me form with me, I'm game. Please let me know your thoughts on this matter.

Thank you for your time and consideration in this important matter.
